6 Reasons the Theatre Encourages a Joyful and Connected Life

Since 1961, the world has celebrated the magic of theatre on March 27th known as World Theatre Day. Created by the International Theatre Institute ITI, this day aims to bring awareness to theatre and international theatre events. Over 90 ITI centres celebrate this day, along with theatre companies, theatre professionals, theatre schools, theatre lovers, theatre teachers and more, including us theatre folk here at TicketPeak! The goals of World Theatre Day are simple: to promote theatre in its many forms across the globe, to bring awareness to the value of the theatre, to help theatre communities promote their work on broader and worldwide scale, to simply enjoy the theatre in all its forms, and finally to share the joy of theatre with as many people as possible. These last two goals really resonate with us here at TicketPeak. So, in honour of World Theatre Day, we are sharing 6 ways that we think the theatre helps you to lead a more joyful, connected, and happier life.Keep reading for 6 ways that we believe the theatre in all its forms can benefit you and bring more joy to your life.

1. Enhance your literary and historical knowledge when you go to the theatre

When you attend the theatre, you’ll be brushing up on your literary and historical knowledge. You’ll enhance your knowledge of plots as well as vocabulary. If you attend a Hamlet or a Romeo and Juliet play, you’ll be immersing yourself in the literary genius that is William Shakespeare, an English poet and playwright who is considered one of the world’s greatest writers. How’s that for upping your literary knowledge?

2. Practice reading actors’ emotions and advance your emotional intelligence

When you watch live theatre, you have to interpret the actors’ emotions. This in turn can help you better understand emotions in your day-to-day life. This concept is known as emotional intelligence, coined in 1995 by psychologist Daniel Goleman, which is the ability to understand and manage emotions to lead a happier life.

3. Build your self-confidence by being on stage as a student of the theatre

Building self-confidence doesn’t come easy to all of us. Being a student of theatre is an excellent way to learn the importance of believing in yourself and your ability to succeed. This goes for both children and adults!

4. Embrace the opportunity for human connection at the theatre

If you’re attending the theatre, you’re bound to be surrounded by the opportunity for human connection. Whether this be connecting emotionally with the actors on stage or sitting next to someone you may not know (yet!). As humans, we have an innate need for connection and interaction with others. The theatre is the ultimate space to connect with others on a human level.

5. Feel good about supporting your local community and it’s talent

At TicketPeak, some of our favourite theatre companies are those that are local. We believe in building and supporting local talent and love that we have so many clients that run local community theatres. Consider supporting local and feel good about experiencing the talent your community has to offer. Not sure where to find local talent? A quick Google search “local theatre near me” should help with that!

6. Enjoy a good laugh at the theatre and release your body’s natural endorphins

Comedy is at the heart of the theatre. It is thought that comedy reached its height of brilliance from playwright Aristophanes. Comedy was literally born into the theatre! If you want a good (and often dramatic) laugh, head to the theatre and we’re sure it won’t disappoint.
