Ticketing News: The Top 10 Ticketing Moments of 2014

10. The London Eye New Year’s Eve Bash announces that they will make the switch from free non-ticketed admission to reserved ticketing. Met with mixed feelings, this change significantly reduced the number of potential attendees and tickets are completely sold out. Only time will tell if this ticketing endeavor will continue…
9. The Kansas City Royals reveal that they will be making the switch from traditional ticketing to online ticketing for their season ticket holders. “My Royals Tickets” will offer its users a bevy of features including free ticket transfers and easy re-sell options.
7. The 2014 Ryder Cup became one of the first professional golf events to incorporate RFID wristbands for audience entrance and social media engagement. The tickets were split between traditional tickets and the wristbands and were, on the whole, quite well received.
6. Disney Theatrical Productions introduces a new ticket exchange policy for its Broadway musicals Aladdin and The Lion King. Their new ticketing policy allows ticket holders to change the date that they see the show (for any reason) up until 2 hours prior to the scheduled performance, AND there is no limit to the number of exchanges that can be made. There is however a modest exchange fee of $12 attached to this luxury.
3. The Ticketmaster class action lawsuit objection and opt out deadlines closed on September 15th. The final approval hearing will be held in early January of 2015, so we will have to wait and see how this one turns out…
2. The Lion King set itself apart as the top earner in box-office history for both stage productions and film. On September 3rd they played their 7,000th show! Over the past 17 years on stage the show has grossed over $6.2 billion worldwide. To put this in perspective, the previous titleholder, The Phantom of the Opera, grossed $6 billion worldwide, and the film titleholder, Avatar, has grossed $2.8 billion respectively.
1. Lollapalooza made history this past summer when it became the first major music festival to introduce and implement cashless RFID wristbands for all of their festival attendees. These RFID wristbands and the accompanying POS system were created by Montréal-based company, Intellitix.
