Twitter for your Performing Arts Marketing Plan: The Basics

Have the tweeters of Twitter got you in a tizzy? Don’t worry – there’s really not that much to it!As mentioned in one of our previous posts, Twitter is a great social media platform to include in your performing arts marketing plan because it will help you effectively engage in industry-specific conversations with your growing community of followers, build audience loyalty and increase your organization’s visibility.

We’re here to walk you through the initial stages of Twitter set-up. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Start at Square One

Let’s begin by setting up an account. Go to Twitter.com and fill out the information required to create an account. Twitter will automatically generate some suggested usernames based on your submitted information; however, it’s best to have a username that clearly represents your business, is easy to remember and is easily searchable. For example, our twitter username is TicketPeak. Easy to remember and very clearly us!

Pro-Tip: Use the shortest, recognizable form of the name of your business. At only 140 characters long, the brevity of tweets requires concise, well thought out wording. You don’t want your handle taking up too much room!

While Twitter usernames can be changed later, it is really best to get it right the first time. Changing usernames can confuse present and future followers, as well as search engines.

Last but not least, create and then confirm your account through email verification. You are now officially ready to join the Twittersphere!

Step 2: It’s All in the Details

Next, you’ll be prompted with some suggested users to follow. You can decide whether to opt in or skip this. Remember that one of your goals should be to connect with like-minded companies and individuals that share your company’s interests, so keep that in mind when selecting people to follow!

In our opinion, the first thing you should do is upload an easily recognizable profile picture (your company logo is a great choice) and a custom header photo. There are few things less appealing than the Twitter egghead avatar and a lacklustre profile page, so do this first!

Finishing touches to your profile page include writing a short biography and linking up your organization’s website. These components attract potential followers so it’s in your organization’s best interest to put your best foot forward right from the beginning.

Step 3: Follow the Leader

Now that you have your ‘t’s crossed and i’s dotted’, it’s time to find some people to follow. Use your organization’s keywords to find relevant people and companies to connect with. It’s important that you try to balance theses between your industry’s top-tweeters and those with smaller followings. While those with smaller followings may not initially seem as appealing, they are more likely to follow you back and could eventually turn into one of your company’s big supporters! Quality always trumps quantity.

Step 4: Start Tweeting

You are all set to start tweeting! Remember to tweet relevant information often. This will help you increase your organization’s visibility as well as the likelihood of being found by other like-minded individuals.
