Last week I came across an article by SocialBro, Xbox: What You Can Learn from the Most Responsive Brand on Customer Support, and I was struck by a few incredible takeaways that could easily be applied to almost any performing arts organization’s social media marketing strategy. But first, let’s talk a little bit about what makes Xbox’s social media presence so effective.

Xbox has over 12 different back-up support accounts on Twitter and post approximately 4,000 tweets each and every day with an average response time of only 2:42 minutes. Pretty impressive – they actually received a Guinness World Record for the ‘Most Responsive Brand on Twitter’! Of course, as part of a $142 billion company Xbox definitely has the manpower and funds to make a serious investment in their online presence.

Millennials. There, I said it. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or somewhere with absolutely no contact with the outside world you’ve likely heard this word over and over again. Get ready…there’s plenty more where that came from!

There’s quite a bit of talk about the millennials and for good reason; according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the millennials (born between 1980 and 1996) represented approximately one third of the U.S. population in 2013! They also represent $1.3 trillion in direct annual spending and studies (including the one I will focus on today) show that a significant portion of this hefty sum goes towards performing and visual arts events.

Now, I have two questions for you:

  1. How many millennials do you regularly see in your performing arts organization’s audience?
  2. How many millennials would you like to regularly see in your performing arts organization’s audience?

If your answer to my first question falls somewhere between “none” and “not enough” – this post is for you! If your answer to my second question is something along the lines of “more” – this post is for you as well!

What does success look like for community theater companies? Is it sold out shows or subscription sell-outs? Does it come in the form of government grants and substantial donor contributions? Or is it simply the ability to say that you have produced a performing art piece of considerable quality?

So, how do you define success?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines success as the following:

  1. the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame;
  2. the correct or desired result of an attempt; and
  3. someone or something that is successful: a person or thing that succeeds.

While these are all completely valid definitions, I particularly like point 2; success is all about achieving a desired result or better yet, meeting goals.
